BOCIAN FLYERS

Dieter & Laurie's Restoration Project

It’s March already! We’re supposed to be flying KYU by now. Wouldn’t have anything to do with adding more fabric covering jobs to the To Do list, would it?

Speaking of fabric covering, the tailfeathers are done, put the finishing touches on today (well, Laurie might find a few more wrinkles to iron out.

Unfortunately the small iron carked it today. It gave us a bit of a jolt the other day when a spark emanated from the bowels of the thing. I took it apart and tried to repair some badly worn insulation and a half broken wire, to no avail. It refused to increase it’s temperature above ambient. I’ve ordered a new one from Aircraft Spruce, according to their website they have one in stock in Melbourne so theoretically it should be here in a couple of days. In the meantime I’ve tried my old small standard iron which I’d used on the seaplane wings. Seemed to glue a small strip of fabric tape to the bottom of the rudder ok, and Laurie will bring his digital thermometer tomorrow so we can properly calibrate it.

Not bad for beginners? And no painting to be done! We’ll start on the ailerons tomorrow.
