BOCIAN FLYERS

Dieter & Laurie's Restoration Project

About time I posted again, have been too busy with club PW-6, changing the (useless) disc brake wheel back to a Tost drum brake per original certification.

Numerous attempts to obtain original equipment like brake handles either from local sources or from Jezow in Poland proved unsuccessful, although we did get an offer from Jezow for two bike-like handles for $ 2000 plus freight, without a firm delivery time……so we thankfully declined and decided to copy an original handle which we got from a pranged Junior from Warkworth.

I completed the painting of the steel fittings, 2 coats etch primer followed by 2 coats of epoxy paint.

I spent quite a bit of time chasing up LN bolts and have sent an enquiry to Sauer in Germany on recommendation from Tom Gilbert, my old partner in the Grob 109 all those years ago.

Ditto finding a supplier for the undercarriage bungees, finally ordering them from SBC in the US. Their service was outstanding, like getting a reply to my request for quotation in about a half hour.

We decided to make our own stretching tool, it’s just a heavy duty turnbuckle. This idea was confirmed by Wolfgang who sent me a photo of the one they use in their club.

Thanks Wolfgang!

We’ve also decided to bite the bullet and spend 1100 bucks on the stork decals for the fuselage,a professional out fit will apply them next Friday.

Laurie has been busy with ongoing beautification of his paint job on the fuselage which now really looks great. I’ll wait till he,s finished polishing before I take a few more photos.
